The Unseen Side of Akihabara
By Clay
Akihabara is, as I'm sure our own Danny Choo would be eager to tell you, a little island of nerdy wonders. Manga, anime, cosplay, maids (with associated cafes), rapping shop keepers, futuristic arcades, and figurines aplent are there to tickle your inner otaku. But did you know that Akihabara originally established its reputation via the sales of electronic parts? This side has been buried under the hype of recent years, but I thought I would share a little bit of the often unnoticed parts of the town with you.
Just outside the station, one can see that it's not all shiny plastic facades in Akihabara.
Here's what I'm talking about: a selection of gadgets so vast it befuddles the mind. This was a section specializing in lights, and so is the case below, too.
It's a bit expensive to be festive around here. Some of those light strings are around 60 American dollars.
Toggles. So many toggles it boggles. To go with them...
Switches! I felt like a kid in a candy store. Especially when I saw...
A big red switch! I decided to become an electronics engineer on the spot just so I would have a reason to push this beauty.
"You call that a toggle? THIS is a toggle," said the comically out of place Australian salesman.
See, this are perfect omiyage (souvenirs) for your dad back home.
Of course, this being Akihabara, if you are into used games, they have you covered. My pretty friend on the throne of Nintendo games will be seeing you off now. Peace!
