"Message from the islands of the Seto Inland Sea"

The hottest event of the Japanese Contemporary Art scene will soon be introduced to the world by Japan International Broadcasting Inc. through NHK WORLD / jibtv channel which is currently available to 130 million households in 120 nations around the globe.

The event is "The Setouchi International Art Festival 2010" held in the 7 islands of the beautiful Seto Inland Sea, the National Park of Japan.

The Seto Inland Sea is an area blessed with rich history and an bundant natural environment, but it is also a region struggling with difficult problems such as pollution, and depopulation of the communities.

The Setouchi International Art Festival and the Symposium is held in hopes of bringing the vitality back to the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. This art festival is planned to be held every three years, with 2010 as its inaugural year.

World renowned artists and architects from 18 countries and regions have come here to create their works and productions in the midst of the unique environment of the islands of long history and rich culture.
The harmonization of modernity and tradition in the serenity of inland sea has literally created a one-of-a-kind art scene that attracted more than 100 thousand spectators in the first 30 days.

The three-part-program series will show the high-lights of the exhibitions and associated performances and events including the International Symposium to discuss "What is our true cultural affluence".

Go-ahead for Net Distribution Trial

Japan International Broadcasting Inc.(JIB), have agreed in principle to conduct the distribution trial of International broadcasting, using the Key Hole TV's technology, which was developed by the limited liability company, Cognitive Research Laboratories, Inc (Shibuya-ku, Tokyo).

JIB will provide its contents to the experimental real-time streaming for portable terminals. The Key Hole TV technology is based on the P2P (peer-to-peer) real-time streaming which has exceedingly-small transmission delay.

"SAMURAI SPIRIT : KYUDO" won the Gold prize in Germany

One of the feature program series of "SAMURAI SPIRIT", made by JIB's production team, produced on commission from NHK WORLD, has been awarded the intermedia-globe GOLD prize in the Documentaries: Sports and Activities division at Germany's annual World Media Festival 2010. The World Media Festival is a global competition for modern media which over 560 production from 26 different countries entered this year.

Producer, Shinya Kikuchi commented " Although it is difficult to comprehend the precepts of the samurai, we're glad that we were able to introduce the spiritual nature of Japanese martial arts to our international audiences."

"NHK WORLD TV/ jibtv" promotion debut at PBS Annual Meeting in Texas

The 2010 PBS Annual Meeting was held from May 17th through May 20th in Austin, Texas. More than 1,000 US public television professionals and decision makers representing nearly 175 public television licensees nationwide got together in this premier national event to spotlight PBS contents.

Sharing the same public service mission, NHK WORLD TV / jibtv for the first time ever participated in this US national PBS event to promote NHK WORLD TV-HD. Setting up an exhibit booth right down the hallway from the General Session Ballroom, NHK WORLD / jibtv has shown a strikingly crystal clear HD live broadcast from Tokyo on the 42 inch plasma TV.

In addition, NHK WORLD TV / jibtv had shown the channel, 24/7 at the entire 800 guest rooms in the Hilton Austin, for in-room viewing during the show. One-on-one meetings with station executives in midst of this live broadcast environment helped enhance NHK WORLD / jibtv's corporate image, better recognition of the high quality, unbiased news programs among others and solid determination to serve to the US public television broadcasters and their viewers. Through these promotional activities, NHK WORLD / jibtv channel is aiming to reach and exceed 50% of the US TV households within the next 12 months.

JIB program distribution growing worldwide

In the past six months Japan International Broadcasting Inc. has expanded its distribution networks especially in Asian countries. First of all, our recent launch into Republic of Korea was a big one step forward for the channel. "jibtv" inaugurated in Korea's broadcasting provider, "Sky Life", from April 1, 2010, aired through KoreaSat: Sky Blue HD Channel 97. Sky Life is the digital media leader in Korea, providing over 150 specialized channel with the latest digital satellite broadcasting system. Sky HD is the only 24 hour HD channel in Korea.

Hatsuhisa Takashima, President and CEO of Japan International Broadcasting Inc. says "I am particularly glad that jibtvprograms are now available in Korea in HD format, as more viewers are now moving on to high quality HD television. We would like to strengthen our HD distribution, together with expanding the receivable households around the globe especially those who live in the neighboring countries."
Other remarkable launch in Asian region this year, are in Malaysia's DE Multimedia (IPTV) International Channel 12, Sri Lanka's Dialog TV (Satellite IS-12) Channel 32, and in Guam through Marianas Cablevision(Cable TV) Digital Basic and TeleGuam Holdings GUdTV(IPTV) SD-Channel 61 / HD-Channel 461.

Another great endeavor for JIB this year was the launch into Hawaii's Oceanic Time Warner Cable. From February 12, 2010, NGN (Nippon Golden Network) started carrying jibtv programs in both standard and high-definition formats through Oceanic Time Warner Cable's digital channel 682 and HD Digital Basic channel 1682.

The launch ceremony was held in Hawaii on February 16, 2010, participated by around 50 invited guests including the Senator of Hawaii, Mr. Daniel K. Inouye, and other local leaders and broadcasters. Live broadcasting of the channel was shown at the reception using the 52 inch HD television screen, which everyone commented on its exceptional picture quality.
jibtv programs are now available at 125 million households in around 120 countries, as of April 2010, and is moving forward to extend our channel distribution across the globe.

Japan TV Showcase: 6 part series program, reporting on the activities of Japanese who are working to offer a helping hand for the people around the world.

In the second installment of "WILLING HANDS", the theme is "skill", featuring on a Japanese couple working in Sri Lanka, Negombo to teach the way to prepare and make "Japanese style dried fish".

Even though they can catch plenty of fish at their adjacent sea, they need "dried fish" as a preservative food, because of lack of diffusion of refrigerator caused by poverty and shortage of power supply.

Mr. Murakami who used to work on a ship, draw on his experiences and knowledge and teach the know-how to the local people.

This program introduces the traditional Ainu culture and features on people in Shiraoi town, Hokkaido, working to integrate the Ainu culture into modern life.

Shiraoi town in Hokkaido, northernmost island of Japan, is working on transmitting the traditional Ainu culture to both home and abroad. One of their special local culture, Traditional Ainu dance, was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009.

In this program, we look into the meaning and joy of inheriting and transmitting traditional local culture to wider generation, through the activities of local people, who wishes to make the Ainu wisdom and culture be known wider in the world.
